Meet Paul Sapia '92

As a market development advisor for Humana’s Bold Goal in both Jacksonville and Tampa, Paul Sapia brings together community leaders, businesses, nonprofit organizations, government agencies and health care professionals to address community specific health issues and ways to bring effective programs and services to scale. He’s held positions in health care ranging from clinician to consultant. It was at FSCJ where Paul began exploring his career options.

After high school, Paul enrolled at the College. “I was undecided on what I wanted to study, but I knew I wanted to continue my education. FSCJ afforded me the opportunity to get more core classes as I worked and explored my educational options,” he said. Paul learned to budget his time between work, friends and completing class assignments. In 1992, he graduated from FSCJ with an Associate in Arts and transferred to the University of Florida, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sports Science. Paul also attended the University of North Florida and earned a master’s in health administration.

He worked as an athletic trainer providing preventative services, emergency care and rehabilitating injured athletes. He later transitioned from clinician to overseeing contract negotiations for a rehabilitation company and medical sales. Paul joined Humana’s contracting/network management team and was later offered another position with the company that he could not refuse—an opportunity to start a Bold Goal program in Jacksonville. “Bold Goal is a population health strategy to galvanize our Humana employees and our community partners as we work toward improving the health of the communities we serve by 20 percent by 2020 because we want to help make health easier for everyone," said Paul. “This role allows me to utilize my strength in relationship building along with my background in the health care industry to convene community stakeholders to come together to focus on social determinants of health, like food insecurity and mental well-being.”

He loves his work and bringing together health care, corporate and nonprofit organizations as well as community leaders to meet the Bold Goal. “The opportunity that I have working as an integration leader for Humana has been truly inspiring, and the progress we are making inspires me to do more,” shared Paul.

Paul enjoys a successful career and desires the same for students and individuals looking to enroll in college. “Take this opportunity to learn how to learn. Your drive to learn and the confidence in your ability to learn are often more important than the specific content of the class.”
